The Detroit $tash might look like an ordinary leather wallet at first glance, but there is far more to it than that. Every Detroit Wallet is crafted from leather salvaged from vintage car seats, pretty swanky, right! Just imagine, at one point that bit of leather that is now in this wallet could have been sat on by an 80's or 90's icon like 'The Hoff' - I mean, he almost certainly didn't, but there is like a 0.00000001% chance of that being true, and that is a heck of a lot higher percentage than him having sat on any other wallet (apart from his own, the chances of that are pretty high...).
What I'm trying to say here, is that these wallets have a character and a story that you simply wouldn't get from using brand new leather. Whether you're a vintage car nut, an up-cycling aficionado or just someone who appreciates a bit of a backstory to your merchandise, The Detroit has you covered.
As we've mentioned, the Detroit is made from premium leather which has been reclaimed from premium vintage automobiles. This means that each one is inherently unique, and has its own character and history. There are a range of car makes to choose from, including Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, Ford and more. Each make has certain leather colours available, which across the whole range totals 4 different leather colours to choose from: Black, Beige, Grey and Burgundy.
The wallet itself takes the form of a simple sleeve design, with two pockets, both on the same side. This keeps it very minimalist. Both pockets stack on top of each other on the front side, and allow for cards and folded notes to be stored easily. The wallet can hold up to around 8 cards and some cash, but will probably be best with between 2-5 cards and a few folded notes.
When used with just a few cards and notes, The Detroit is impressively slim and has a real minimalist appeal about it.
The design of the wallet is deliberately kept fairly simple, so as to not detract from the vintage car leather itself, which is the whole appeal of it. As such, the leather is stitched with a subtle matching thread, which complements the leather. The only other feature is the engraving on the back of the wallet. This is two part, the Mariclaro logo in the center, then below that - and most importantly - the exact make and model of the car which the leather was reclaimed from. This touch ensures that there is a link from the wallet to the history and backstory that gave life to it.
Mariclaro, the Canadian based designers behind Detroit $tash promise to put as much love, care and precision into their wallets as was put into the design of the original vintage cars they come from. They are so confident about the quality of their wallets that each comes with a 2 year warranty.
For me though, perhaps the best thing about the Detroit Wallets concept of up-cycling classic car leather, is that I am unable to look at it without for some reason being reminded of this era defining moment of cinema, when the Karate Kid showed us all what the 80's was about. Different times...
Just at the time of writing this the Detroit $tash ticked over to fully funded, so this project will become a reality. To find out more or to make a pledge, visit the Detroit $tash Kickstarter Page. You can also check out the video below.
